- Best gig you've ever played?

We recently supported Skunk Anansie on their European tour and we got to play Brixton Academy which has been a childhood dream of ours... we had our family and friends there - it felt really good! 

- Worst gig you've ever played?

We played at show last year where all the equipment was falling apart - the drums were falling over and the PA was some old amps as speakers and I was getting an electric shock every time I sang into the mic! Despite that we actually ended up playing a wicked set! 

- If you could replace each other with any other musician who would it be ? 

Can we just add Dave Grohl to the line up? 

 

- What have you got lined up for us at Camp VC?

- So what made you wanna get involved with Camp VC ? 

I met Gemma at a Pub in Deptford and we started talking bikes & we've been fan girls ever since!!

CAMP VC X GRACE HAZEL YOGA

We're so excited to have House of vans yoga boss lady Grace Hazel onsite at this years CAMP VC teaching free yoga classes on Saturday morning & afternoon for all you yoga bunnies. She's an absolute ray of sunshine & were stoke to have her involved. Get to know Grace below & find out what she'll be bringing with her to CAMP VC this year.

When did you start to teach yoga? 

I started to teach yoga back in January 2014, so 3 years ago. Yoga literally changed my life. I discovered it 9 years ago and it’s transitioned and guided me through the highs, and most importantly stuff that’s been tough. I began teaching because it felt, and still does feel necessary to introduce others to the continuous healing it can offer to your life.

 

You leaned to ride this year with Mai! How did you find it? 

YES! Maite was an awesome teacher. I’d ridden on the back of my dad’s motorbike when I was little, so it was a lot of fun to be in the drivers seat. 

                                                                                                                                                                                                                       

What have you got lined up for us onsite! (sessions, whats involved, what style of yoga etc) 

I'll be teaching two 60 minute yoga classes in the morning. The style I teach varies, but it can predominantly be described as vinyasa flow. We'll start off soft with a meditation, then we'll slowly begin to move our bodies. Vinyasa flow is basically linking up various yoga poses with breath and transition so that the postures become a flowing sequence. It'll be totally accessible to all levels, so come along if you're completely new - if you're a well accustomed yogi!

 

What made you want to support the CAMP VC event? 

I met the lovely Mai through the design studio we both work at. I liked her straight away. When she invited me to ride with her, I met Gemma who I also really vibed with. I love what VC does and how it promotes bringing a strong community of women together. Woman have got to choose to uplift each other. It's an honour to be teaching for CAMP VC.

Big news for CAMP VC with VCC 's live team talks project !! We're super excited to announce that we'll be welcoming to the CAMP VC site the legendary Elspeth Beard .


As the first English woman to circumnavigate the world solo on a motorcycle in the early 1980s Elspeth is a true pioneer in every sense of the word. We had the pleasure of riding & hanging out with Elspeth recently ahead of the launch of her book "Lone Rider" & talked to her about her amazing journey. .

CAMP VC - RIDE OUT ROUTES

So here we have it... Our CAMP VC Saturday ride out routes around the surrounding Brecon Beacons! For two of the the three ride below we have some of our friends leading rides for all bike sizes which you can sign up to join onsite when you reach the event but also feel free to print off a map and freestyle your days ride  :)

THE RESERVOIR RIDE

Dipping right down into the valley you will reach this absolutely stunning reservoir location by a ride through the most amazing twisty narrow countryside pine covered forest roads we've ever ridden.  a perfect place to stop off for lunch, with a traditional village (complete with traditional country pub for a quick pint) & beautiful waterfalls less than 10 minutes away theres alot to see when you reach Talybont on ask, but the ride there more than equals your destination. This is one of our favourite rides & even better is its perfect for big or small bikes. The lovely Lousie Deason  will be leading a ride out around this route  on Saturday so sign up when you arrive onsite to join her!

THE CASTLE RIDE

With a wild swimming spot along the way the Castle route is packed with lots to see & do both on & off the bike. Passing by a reservoir or two, waterfalls & with a traditional country pub along the way for lunch this ride is a great one to do if you want a varied day. The lovely Joli Riley will be leading a ride from camp on Saturday around this route so if you want join her sign up onsite when you arrive.

THE BLACK MOUNTAIN PASS ROUTE

The longest of our 3 ride routes the black mountains are tapped as one of the worlds best driving roads & we are lucky enough to have it right on our doorstep. The Black Mountain pass is 27 miles of long picturesque scenery, switch back twists with a total of 81 corners & takes you right thought the west side of the Brecon Beacons countryside. Whether you're looking for a roller coaster ride out or an idyllic poot through the national park this view is pretty much unmissable! 

CAMP VC X HOUSE OF VANS RIDE OUT

The wonderful people at VANS are hosting a meet up to ride out to CAMP VC on Friday the 4th of August at 9am at HOUSE OF VANS! With a FREE brekkie for everyone to fuel you up before you head out & tons of giveaways , ALL bike sizes & riders are welcome to come meet up & ride out to CAMP VC together. 

Its very important you let us know if you're interested in joining the meet up so we have enough breakfast for you all! If you're interested in joining the meet up please email Louise at louise.deason@gmail.com so she can count you in :)

Once you're signed up lovely Louise will send you the details of where to park etc at House Of Vans. You'll be grouped into bike sizes/ licences etc for your rides at the meet if you wanna ride together so you can all follow a safe route there.

We had another amazing year at Dirt quake this year. Love this event every year. It never disappoints

It was Namin's turn to race in the 125cc class this year on Gemma's trusty old SR125. If you ever wanted to try dirt track racing its the perfect place to start out. We've also got our ladies Dirt camp event coming u this weekend in collaboration with Greenfield dirt track & the DTRA who are also coming to give beginners dirt track mini bike sessions at CAMP VC ! Go get that dirt ladies!!!

So how long have you been riding? 

On and off since I was about 17. As soon as I could get a licence I got a cheap bike and just rode around Jersey, stalling a lot if I remember rightly. It's a pretty quiet place with smalls roads and a VERY low speed limit over most of the island so ideal to learn.

 

What first made you want to learn to ride? 

My dad was a wheeler dealer so there were always different cars and bikes around the place when I was growing up, he would usually let me 'test drive' whatever was there which got me interested. He also used to take me out on the back of his bikes - the earliest one I remember was a really funny custom Honda chopper and he moved onto sports bikes after that. I guess it made me want to have one myself!

 

How long have you owned your Honda?      

My bike is a 97 Honda Rebel 125 & Ive owned it for about a year and a half. It had been sat in a garage for quite a while when i bought it and has done almost no miles from new - so it was great to actually get her out on the road where she belongs! 

 

Have you done any custom work to your bike?  

   I took the mirrors of so I could cut around London traffic better - haha. 

 

What made you choose your bike?    

 I'd just decided to get another bike and my dad gave me a bunch of old 90's Honda brochures he'd found in his garage. I saw the CA 125's and thought they looked like fun and I hadn't seen many of them about on the road, so set about finding one.

Whats the best moto trip you've ever been on on your Honda?

      I camped in Snowdonia last summer and it was amazing - beautiful roads and scenery. I love being out with just my bike and a tent and spending all day outdoors -when you don't have a route so just take whichever roads look interesting. Some local bikers were pretty impressed that my 125 Honda had come all the way up from London- it loved the trip too! 

 

Any advice to anyone wanting to start riding?        

Just do it - don't listen to anyone who tells you that you can't do it (especially because you're a girl) or that it's dangerous.Get a small bike and head out on some quiets roads for as long as it takes till you feel confident - I've loved having a 125 so I think they're a good place to start. Having a bike gives you a lot of independence and freedom to travel around. If you like solo travelling like me I think its the perfect way to do it, and its cool to ride with friends and meet new people as well.

 

What are you looking forward to most at CAMP VC?     

Waterfalll swimming, and beer! 

DIRT CAMP WEEKENDER

Can't wait till CAMP VC for a dirt fix? The lovely people over at the DTRA & GREENFIELD DIRT TRACK are running another LADIES DIRT CAMP weekender at @greenfielddirttrack on the 22nd/ 23rd July! .


Dirtcamp is a ladies Dirt Track Experience weekend run by the DTRA  in conjunction with GREENFIELD DIRT TRACK, VC LONDON  & VCC! They supply the bikes, instructors and track for a weekend of dirt track lessons & camping you just bring the good times & your tent ⛺️

CAMP VC x HONDA - RACHAEL SHERLOCK - 1983 CB100

Next up in our coming to Camp VC we've got Rachael Sherlock of Nefarious skate crew & her rad little CB100.  One of the most friendly lovely ladies we know Rachael has been skateboarding for years & is involved with some incredible Skateboarding charities & organisations such as Skate Pal teaching skateboarding to all genders & age groups everywhere from London to Palestine to skate.  We're stoked to have her with us all weekend teaching on the VANS skate ramp with the other Nefarious girls so go say hi when you get to site!

Where are you from & where do you live now?

Grew up in the West Country (Clevedon to be exact) and now living in London

 

Whats your profession?

I'm a Senior Studio Technician at ITV Daytime (not sure why they call it daytime because it's definitely the morning shows!)

 

When did you get involved with Nefarious?

This summer will be three years since I joined Nefarious. I decided to start skating again and went to a girls night by myself and met a few of them that had just decided to start a group for girls wanting to hang out and learn to skate.

 

Skating has taken you to some pretty incredible places, wheres the most amazing place you've ever skated?

I really love Palestine and all the work that SkatePAL and Charlie (the founder) does out there. Being able to volunteer and skate with the kids has changed my outlook on life. I'm repeatedly inspired by the resilience and positive attitude of all the kids and families I've met out in Palestine, despite the challenging circumstances they live under due to military occupation.

 

 You seem to really love teaching skating as you've been involved with so many rad projects & initiatives teaching all over the place. Which projects have you been involved with? 

As well as being involved with SkatePAL I run a monthly 'skate dates' every second Sunday of the month in Victoria Park. It's promoted through a friends company called Urban Hippie Collective and is a community project aimed at getting more people (all ages and gender) involved in skateboarding. I also like to keep in touch with the Women in Board and Action Sports as they host some fantastic events with inspirational women speakers.

 

Do you have any good advice for anyone wanting to start learning how to skate?

Social media is so big these days. Check out videos on Instagram and Youtube and follow the things you like, watch tutorials and just get a board and give it a go! If you're lacking in confidence start near your house, up and down your drive way or find some friends to go to the skatepark with. Lots of indoor parks like House of Vans even run mini Skate Schools now, on the weekends and school holidays. So you just started riding motorcycles in the last year! What made you want to start riding?

When I was younger we had a BMX track near our house and I'd often wish my BMX was a motocross bike- sad I know! But my mum hated the idea so the closest I ever got was riding a friends mini moto or chicken chaser around a field. Then a couple of years ago I went to Thailand and managed to hire a little 125cc to take me through the winding rainforest roads that lead to a place called Pai. I was pretty hooked after this trip and got my geared CBT the minute I got back and started saving for a Mutt Motorcycle. After almost a year of saving I was almost ready to buy when I saw a Honda CB100 on the VC or The Bike Shop instagram page and fell in love. I think I bombarded them with lots of messages so they'd know that when they're ready to sell I was serious about buying and had the money already saved!

 

What made you go for a Honda CB? 

I really like the cafe racer style to it. It's also a good size for me (a tiny person). When I went to collect it, a few people had commented on how I was the perfect size for it and I didn't really realise until my friend escorted me home alongside his massive Triumph just how tiny me and my bike are. I think if the bike was any bigger then I'd struggle. I'm not really keen on bigger bikes but I have passed my theory and will take my full test this year, but I'm only really looking forward to taking off my L plates that cramp my style, not get a bigger bike!

 

How long have you owned your Honda?  

A year this summer ?!? (I should probably check this because my insurance will run out...)

 

What the best and worst thing about riding in London? Any tips for anyone who is apprehensive to ride in such a busy city? 

The traffic is horrendous and for the first few months I was a bit afraid to weave through it (although my bike is so small it's perfect for sneaking through gaps of stationary cars!) That's now the best thing about riding through London, that rush hour doesn't really apply to you if you're sneaky enough. But you also have to be so careful. Lots of cars have almost hit me by pulling out and into my lane and I once even got right up next to a woman's window and she still was oblivious. If someone is pulling out of a junction I often slow down a bit and assume they've not seen me, and even if I get solid eye contact with the driver I'm still cautious. 

 

What advice would you give to someone just starting out riding or wanting to?

The monthly meetings at The Bike Shed in London are good. Lots of friendly women and faces to give advice about places to take your CBT and get you hyped. They can also recommend good starter bikes and ensure you don't get ripped off.

 

So you'll be one of the ladies we've got lined up to teach on the Vans X Nefarious mini ramp at Camp VC!  What have you guys got lined up for us?

Get ready for leg day because if you're new to skateboarding then we'll most likely start with some simple pumping in the ramp! Would be cool to get some people dropping in for the first time too!

 

What are you looking forward to most at CAMP VC?  

Skating, drinking and having a go on some different bikes if people trust me enough! (before beer is consumed obviously) haha

Where are you from & where do you live? 

I am from Italy, Bergamo. I used to live in Milan and New York in the past 8 years but now I am based in Bergamo. I'm in charge of all free & marketing acvities, digital marketing web strategy for DMD. 

 

We absolutely love that DMD is a family business! Please tell us the history of the DMD company from how it started up to today? 

In 1975, my Dad - AMILCARE set up a company called NORDWEST, whose core business was importing the main helmets brands like BELL, SHOEI and GPA to Europe.  
In 2007, thanks to the know-how and the experience acquired during last 20 years, Amilcare and my brother Davide decided to become a helmet producer inter own right developing a new helmet brand called DMD. The DMD name represents the acronym of the name of three siblings: Davide, Michela and Danila. I started working for the company in 2010 after my graduation in Economics at Bocconi University in Milan.

 

What are the values at the heart of the DMD brand?

DMD really cares about the safety of its riders as we are bikers too and we try to give the best quality we can to our customers. Our products are first of all characterized by quality and safety and, only after that, come style and design. A helmet is for protection, so the first thing to focus on the development of a safe shell, that can resist as much as possible to the impact. Thats why our helmets are made in fiber glass and carbon kevlar as they represent noble materials that are very resistant and light. Also the inner covering is studied carefully in order to offer the maximum comfort to people, like us, who ride a lot. Our staff worked very hard on the dimension of the helmet in order to get the smallest helmet size outer with a perfect fit and a maximum compactness. A bigger shell doesn't look great! 

 

Do you ride? 

Right now I ride a  Vespa but I'm hoping to have a big bike soon! My brother Davide rides a 1938 Knucklehead.

 

Which DMD helmet is your personal favourite?

Our favorite helmet is the Woodstock model as it was our fist model made by custom paints. It was love at first sight! It embraces all the significant elements of the 70’s that are for us a great inspiration source. Our intention with the helmet was a strong nod toward the legendary seventies hence the name Woodstock! 

 

Please tell us why you you're supporting CAMP VC this year!

We love your idea to create an event where women can catch up and ride together. We want to support all the women who ride around the world as that community grows bigger and bigger! GIRL POWER!

Ready to party at CAMP VC? Well these ladies are definitely gonna get the party started! 

We' re transporting a little piece of Hackney to CAMP VC in the form of the best bar in town & man do these ladies know how to party. The Blondies bar girls will be onsite all weekend mixing up  cocktails, handing out FREE Piston Head lager & serving up some Sailor Jerry rum ready for your FREE drink on arrival but first heres a little interview to help you get to know the biggest party animals onsite

Blondies ladies! So where you originally come from & where do you guys live now?

Verity, Sharmaine and Rochelle Cox. We're all Sisters who grew up in Sydney. We all moved over separately. I guess we followed Sharmaine, who's been here for about 7 years now. Rochelle's been for 4.5 and Verity for almost 3. Our older sister Jasmine lives out here too now but she working as a Air Hostess so although its a family business, she's not around as much. 

 

Tell us all about Blondies Bar! Where are you? When did you open? 

We are over in Clapton in East London. We opened almost a year and a half ago now. Which is crazy. But it fun and exciting, especially that we get to do it together. 

 

So how did you get the idea for Blondies? 

We always wanted to do something like this, but it came around quite quickly. Sharmaine and Verity we're chatting about it one day as Verity was hating her job. Sharmaine said lets do our own thing, then the ball started rolling.. Within 2 weeks we had a deposit down on a space. Then the games really began. It's our first time doing anything like this, so there was a lot to learn, but we're so glad we did.

 

We love that you're an all girl crew killing it in the bar business!  What made you want to open Blondies Bar together?

I think it's the strong bond we have. We've always been such a close family so the idea of working together wasn't scary. We always joke that it was either a bar/cafe or a band. But being that Verity is the only musically inclined one, this seemed like the better option. Rochelle is an amazing illustrator and designs all our merch, beer can designs and all the fun patches and stuff. She incredible. Sharmaine has a real eye for design and basically designed the interior of the building. Most of the cool stuff inside was her idea. We build the bar together as well, with the help of one of our really good friends Rob Nye. Its got a real DIY/Dive bar feel to it.. I guess thats why. lol.. 

 

What are the good & bad parts of working in a family team? ;) 

We all have strong personalities, but we respect each other a lot. Everyone has valid opinions and their area of expertise, so we just try and come at it from that angle. 

 

What made you want to get involved with Camp VC?

We've been watching the VC girls from afar for a while and they just seem like a really positive crew. Bringing females together and promoting a supportive community. We love getting involved with like minded people, so we reached out to Gemma. Think it's a pretty perfect match. 

 

What are you gonna be bringing to Camp VC? 

We're bringing the party vibe. We love throwing a kill party, and just wanna bring good energy. A good friend of ours came up with a game called 'Disco Bingo', with mandatory dance breaks and tongue in cheek bingo calls. Its super fun. We'll be bringing that too. 

 

Favourite tune to party to?

Shameless to say, or maybe not... Drake still makes us smile and shake out things while we're working. That or Supergrass's 'Alright' 

 

Favourite poison to get the party started? 

The infamous 'Blondies Rum Punch' of course 

CAMP VC X HONDA - NATASHA FARRAR - 1980 XL250

Only a month & half to go until CAMP VC !! We're very proud to be hooking up with HONDA this year to support the event & beyond.

We know so many bad ass women who are ripping Hondas in every shape & size (we've even got a couple ourselves) so we thought we'd introduce you to a some of these ladies & their wheels  who will be making their way to burn through the Breacon Becons at CAMP VC this summer!  First up the lovely Natasha Farrar & her XL250.

What do you do for a job?
 

I work in film and tv which just means at any given moment I could be doing anything from herding turkeys to wearing a wig in a car with a stunt driver whatever it is it won't ever involve sitting in an office. This won't be forever though, I have to figure out what is next. 
 


When & where did you learn to ride? What made you want to learn to ride? 


I learned a few years ago, unofficially in Wood Green on my boyfriends KTM and officially in Billericay with Probike Training with  really truely awesome teachers, I was a nervous wreck when I started and they sorted me right out. 
I didn't know anyone who rode and knew nothing of motorcycle culture. My boyfriend said I could try his bike with him on the back and that was game over, I loved it so that got me started. I have such a unique sense of joy when I'm on a bike even as a passenger. I wish I started sooner. 
 


Explain your amazing bike to us! :)


Ooooo my little red Honda. She is a 1980s XL250 with a 23in front wheel and a dodgy looking fender.  ha ha It's great for nipping around London but I think it dreams about zooming around on grass and dirt in the countryside.
. It's a really simple bike so it's great to learn from. At the moment I don't know much about mechanics so if something goes wrong even I can take a look and get an idea of what's happening and maybe how to fix it. Having said that I've made one or two mistakes but I'll get there. 
 


How long have you owned your bike? 


3 years it's my first and only bike. 
 


Have you done any custom work to your bike?

Barely, it's almost all original. I've taken out the battery so the electrics run off the engine and removed a bit of the faring for looks. If i wanted a little project or fancied customising a bike I would buy something else for that. 
 


What made you choose your bike? 
 

I didn't really. I was looking out for a particular enduro and Andrew Almond from Bolt said his mate Drew at Black Skulls was selling something I might like. I popped over to see it, it just seemed massively red and the engine was too small. But I jumped on it and had a ride and thought woaaaaahhhh this bike was made for me. riding a lighter bike made me feel like a kid I could throw my weight around confidently. So I just had to convince Drew not to sell it to anyone else while I got the money together. Thank you Drew. 
 


Whats the best moto trip you've ever been on?

I've been pretty limited to riding around London but last year I chucked the bike in the back of a van and drove it to meet my cousins camping in Sussex. I spun it around some fields until I felt a Bit too guilty about the grass. I had so much fun, it's a completely different feeling to riding in the road I can't really describe it. If anyone reading this near London wants to go green laneing or take a little trip let me know!
 


Dream motorcycle trip (where & with who)? 


In a dream world there would be Mountains, dirt roads, jungle, the coast or some lakes, sun and a tent. maybe with a local rider who knows good places to go and can help get out of sticky situations.  But for now in the real world it would be camp vc this August! 
 


Any advice to anyone wanting to start riding?


Just do it. At least give it a go!  If you are fearful of something make sure you learn with instructors who put you at ease and are willing to spend time to help you overcome any issues. Resist the desire to get a really powerful bike until you've put in time on he road. My time on the little red has probably made me a better more controlled rider. You might miss the speed of a bigger bike but I think you have to earn that. 
 


What are you most looking forward to at CAMP VC? 

Getting out of london, dirt riding, meeting new homies and learning to skate :) Hurry up August.

An early morning mist hangs low over the heart of London’s old East End. Gemma Harrison kicks the starter on her 1966 Triumph, shattering the silence of a wintry Saturday morning on Cable Street. 

Flanking her is Namin Cho and Mai Storni, who give their own engines a chest rattling roar before tearing off towards Limehouse tunnel.  As they cut through the Docklands – an industrial wasteland of concrete, metal and glass – any nearby vehicles instinctively keep their distance. 

This is the core of VC London: an all-female bike crew redefining what it means to ride for a new generation.

VC LONDON X HONDA

We're absolutely stoked to be working with the mighty Honda on our 2017 CAMP VC event & beyond this year!

From XRs to monkey bikes Honda have manufactured some of our all time favourite motorcycles so from the start we couldn't imagine a better motorcycle manufacturer to team up for CAMP VC. 

We've got some incredible bikes from Hondas motorcycle history coming to site from the legendary Africa Twins, CRFs of all sizes to 125 learner bikes for newbys to learn on & even a little something on 4 wheels from their off road ATV range (yikes!).

VC X DOCKLANDS RIDERS DIRT DAY

Yesterday we held the first  VC X DOCKLANDS RIDERS DIRT DAY over at Docklands riders, East London & man was it a blast. 

A huge thanks to Docklands Riders & to everyone involved for coming down & making it a great one.....Maaaaaaan I'm aching today.

Cant wait for the next one!
